A simple test using valgrinds memory checker, shows that such code causes an invalid read (which leads to a seg fault on my machine)

Sorry, I made a wrong conclusion. A simpler test did not reproduce this "bug".

None of the datanodes have been selected, but the bottom one behaves as if it is selected.
