There is no way in the ExtApp to edit LookupTable properties using a QmitkTransferFunctionWidget or a ctkVTKScalarsToColorsWidget for example.
The QmitkUGVisualizationView could be generalized to work with images, surfaces and unstructured grids.

The first step for accomplishing this would be enabling CTK-VTK widgets by default in MITK superbuild. There is a bug tailored to that already: T15401
In addition, VolumeRendering and Material editor could be all fused into the same widget.
