That is intended, but can be discussed.

What extension should be displayed? E.g. in case of a mitk::Image, there exist many different possible formats with different extensions. The problem is that if an extension is added automatically, changing the filter in the save file dialog would not change the extension or the finally used file format.

Peter, are you going to discuss this on our MITK meeting? Are there other people with opinions about that or can we just close this ticket?

As discussed, we stick to the current (new) way, as it is done in many other applications like libreoffice etc.
