In preferences 'favorite node list' is selected by default.
This leads to some confusion since this list is most likely empty and the user thinks he/she did something wrong.
It would be more convinient to have 'simple list' as default instead.

@thomass Have you used a current build of develop. Currently, if not set by the user in the preferences, it always selects the first tab. "Favorite node list" is never the first tab in the dialog, because the special dialogs (favorite and history) are always added last.
So we can discuss to change from "first tab" to "simple list" (if it exists), but the behavior you describe should not happen, as long as you do not tinker in the preferences.
If you double check, please do not forget to remove your als app settings, to realy have a blank application state.
When the workbench is started from scratch it works.
However, if I open preferences and press ok (without me triggering or changing anything in the preferences), the default is changed to favorite node list and the problem occurs. So I would change the default in the preferences.
